If you’re looking for something quieter, the Scenic Bluff Path is perfect. It gives you stunning views of Carmel Bay, stretching from Point Lobos to Pebble Beach.
This 3.5-mile trail has stairways that lead down to the beach, and there are plenty of spots where you can stop to enjoy the ocean overlooks or catch a colorful sunset.
The path eventually takes you to Carmel River State Beach, a quieter beach that has a peaceful, calming vibe. This spot is ideal if you love to explore, take beautiful photos, or just find an awesome spot to sit back and relax.
Away from the busier main beach, Carmel River Beach feels more secluded, surrounded by rocky bluffs and the sound of crashing Pacific waves. It’s a quiet and peaceful place for nature lovers who want to relax and soak up the beauty of the coast.
3. Carmel Mission
Visiting the San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo Mission is like stepping back in time—and trust me, it’s worth every minute. This beautiful and interesting site, just a short hop from Carmel by the Sea’s downtown, is one of California’s crown jewels when it comes to Spanish mission sites. Founded in 1770 by Father Junípero Serra, this place isn’t just a historic landmark—it’s a living, breathing active parish church.
At the center of it all is the Basilica, finished in 1797, and boy, it’s a showstopper! Most Spanish mission churches are kind of plain, but not this one. The Carmel Mission Basilica takes it to the next level with its highly decorative interior.
Think tunnel-vaulted ceilings, a jaw-dropping 30-foot gilded reredos behind the altar, and some seriously impressive Spanish Colonial liturgical art. Outside, you’ve got a garden courtyard and a Moorish-style domed bell tower—basically, it’s an Instagrammer’s dream.
The Carmel Mission Museum is like the cherry on top. You’ll find collections of treasured artifacts and even get a peek at the room where Father Junípero Serra lived. Wander around the Munrás Courtyard, and you’ll be greeted by lush flowers, swaying palm trees, and maybe even a few flitting Anna’s hummingbirds. Peaceful doesn’t even begin to cover it.
The Carmel Mission is open to the public from Wednesday through Sunday, and if you’re into attending mass, there’s one at the Basilica on Saturday at 5:30pm or on Sundays at 9am, with a little extra magic from choir music at 11am.

There’s an $11.25 fee to access this privately owned route, payable at the Carmel Gate or Pacific Grove Gate. But if you’re staying overnight at The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay, you’ll get complimentary admission to this breathtaking setting.

6. Tor House and Hawk Tower
